Mission

The mission of the Oklahoma German Shepherd Rescue Veterans Program, through our partnerships with the G.I. Wishes Foundation, OKGSR, and Torchlight K9, is to identify eligible Veterans, identify eligible OKGSR dogs, and once a match has been made, cover the cost for two weeks of board & train provided by Torchlight K9.

Program Highlights

The Veterans Program covers the adoption fee
The Veterans Program covers the 2 weeks of board & train at Torchlight K9’s facility
Torchlight K9 provides lifetime Saturday group classes to brush-up basic obedience
(NOTE: Our Program requires the Veteran to commit to attending a minimum of 6
Saturday classes within first year)
Access through G.I. Wishes to apply for financial assistance for one-year basic
veterinarian services. The veterinarian must be pre-approved by G.I. Wishes
Access through G.I. Wishes to foster care of the dog if the Veteran is deployed or in the
hospital
Eligible dogs are identified by the American Flag background on their photo. These dogs have been evaluated by trainers for Veteran program and meet eligibility requirements

Important advisory:

Many rescue animals have unknown care, genetic, and/or breeding history and cannot be expected to fulfill many specific tasks that a Veteran may require – for example, mobility assistance, seizure detection, etc. Thus, it is important that the tasks required be stated in the application process. If our Program cannot provide what you need, we will refer you to other programs.
